Fleet tracking isn’t new. But how it’s done today is changing fast. Azuga, a California-based company founded in 2013 and now part of Bridgestone, is leading the shift. They’re not just building GPS tools, they’re rethinking what it means to manage people, vehicles, and operations with real data.
Here’s how they got there, and what makes them different.
What does Azuga do for fleets?
Azuga helps companies track vehicles, monitor driver behavior, and manage equipment through telematics. That means GPS tracking, dashcams, alerts, driver scores, and a central dashboard that shows what’s happening across the fleet in real time.
But it’s more than just dots on a map.
Azuga uses AI to pull patterns from fleet activity. It predicts issues before they happen, whether it’s a risky driver, a worn-down tire, or missing equipment. It also connects with insurance providers to help fleets lower costs by proving safer behavior.
The company serves more than 13,000 fleets and supports industries like construction, logistics, and utilities.
Where Azuga started and how it grew
Azuga launched in 2013 with a simple mission: improve fleet safety and productivity. Over time, it expanded beyond GPS to include video telematics, insurance data, and predictive analytics. In 2021, Bridgestone acquired the company, giving it the backing of a major automotive brand.
CEO Ananth Rani says the goal has always been to build “a fleet system that understands people, not just machines.”
That mindset has shaped how Azuga builds tools. The focus is on human behavior, transparency, and real-time action, not surveillance.
Why driver behaviour is a priority
One of Azuga’s core features is its driver behavior scoring system. It tracks speeding, harsh braking, rapid acceleration, and distractions. Managers get alerts when things go wrong, but more importantly, drivers see their own stats.
“Drivers want to know how they’re doing,” Rani explains. “We don’t just hand out penalties. We show drivers where they can improve and reward the ones who lead by example.”
That’s where the Driver Rewards Program comes in. It gamifies safety. High scores earn recognition and sometimes even bonuses. This shift from punishment to positive feedback changes the entire tone of fleet management.
Fleets that use it have reported up to 50% reductions in risky driving in six months.

How Azuga tracks tools and assets with BLE
Lost tools and misplaced equipment are expensive and frustrating. Azuga tackled that problem with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Equipment Tracking. These tiny beacons attach to tools and send signals to nearby trackers, showing whether a tool is “With” a vehicle or “Dropped Off” at a site.
Fleet managers can check inventory before sending teams out. If something’s missing, they can find its last known location in seconds.
Fatima Howes, VP of Product, explains: “This level of visibility cuts downtime and helps crews stay prepared. The goal is to keep projects moving, not chasing missing gear.”
It also helps with billing. The system tracks how long equipment is used, making it easier to invoice accurately and plan purchases.
Azuga’s SafetyIQ platform and predictive insights
Azuga also developed SafetyIQ, a platform that combines driver behavior data, vehicle diagnostics, and maintenance schedules. The idea is to prevent breakdowns, accidents, and inefficiencies before they happen.
AI highlights patterns, like a driver idling too long at job sites, or vehicles overdue for service. It also suggests when to rotate tires, check engine health, or change routes to save fuel.
Azuga’s telematics don’t just report what happened. They explain why it happened and what to do next.
ELD compliance and regulatory tools
For fleets that need to meet Hours of Service (HOS) and DVIR rules, Azuga’s ELD (Electronic Logging Device) keeps them compliant. It auto-switches rules between US and Canada, supports multiple languages, and works across mobile devices.
Azuga ELD also gives alerts for HOS limits, detects log conflicts, and simplifies roadside inspections. It’s designed to reduce paperwork and speed up decision-making.
Insurance telematics and better pricing
Azuga’s platform isn’t just for managers, it’s valuable to insurers too.
By analysing real driver data, insurance companies can price policies more accurately. Safer fleets can prove their low risk and access better rates. Azuga estimates some fleets have cut claims costs and premiums significantly using this approach.
It’s a win-win for businesses and underwriters.
What makes Azuga stand out?
Azuga takes a people-first approach. That means giving drivers tools they understand and trust, not just data they can’t see. It means tracking equipment in real time without micromanaging. And it means creating systems that make safety part of the culture.
As Rani puts it, “Innovation starts with empathy. If you build around people, the data works harder, the tech runs smoother, and the business gets stronger.”
Azuga’s platform isn’t just smart, it’s built for real-world fleets trying to run leaner, safer operations every day.
