Interview with Bartolo Hernandez

What keeps you motivated and excited about what you do?

What keeps me motivated and excited about my role in sports management is the profound impact I can have on athletes’ lives. Watching a young athlete develop from a promising talent into a well-rounded professional, both on and off the field, is incredibly rewarding. For instance, one of our athletes, who came from a challenging background, recently graduated from college while simultaneously breaking into the professional leagues. Seeing his transformation and knowing that our holistic approach to management played a part in his success fills me with a deep sense of fulfillment. Each success story is a reminder of why I do what I do.

Moreover, the continuous evolution of the sports industry keeps me engaged and enthusiastic. The integration of new technologies, such as advanced analytics and mental health apps, presents fresh challenges and opportunities. I’m particularly excited about the potential of virtual reality training tools that we’re currently piloting. These innovations not only enhance athletes’ performance but also push me to stay at the cutting edge of the field. This dynamic environment, combined with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference, keeps me driven and passionate about my work every day.

What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy yourself during your downtime?

During my downtime, I find immense joy in staying physically active and engaging in community activities. I’m an avid runner, and I often start my mornings with a run along the scenic routes near my home. This not only keeps me fit but also gives me time to clear my mind and reflect on the day’s challenges. After a good run, I like to enjoy breakfast with my family, which helps me stay grounded and connected with the people who matter most to me.

I also have a passion for boxing and powerlifting. There’s something incredibly satisfying about the discipline and focus required in these sports. Boxing, in particular, allows me to release stress and maintain sharpness, both mentally and physically. In addition, I enjoy playing dominoes, a game that challenges my strategic thinking and provides a relaxing yet engaging way to unwind. Balancing these activities with family time and reading helps me maintain a healthy and productive lifestyle, ensuring that I return to my professional responsibilities rejuvenated and ready to tackle new challenges.

What do you think is your single most crucial trait for success?

The single most crucial trait for my success has been perseverance. The sports management industry is filled with intense competition and unexpected challenges, and without perseverance, it’s easy to become disheartened. For example, early in my career, I faced a significant setback when a highly promising athlete we were managing chose to switch to another agency. It was a tough blow, but I used it as a learning experience. I re-evaluated our approach, improved our services, and focused even more on building strong, personal relationships with our clients.

Perseverance has also helped me maintain a long-term vision, even when short-term results were not immediately evident. Building Global Sports Management into the respected firm it is today required years of dedication, strategic thinking, and the ability to bounce back from failures. This trait is not just about enduring hardships but also about consistently striving to improve and innovate. It’s this relentless drive to keep pushing forward, despite the obstacles, that has enabled me to achieve sustained success in my career.

What’s the weirdest thing that has happened in your career?

One of the weirdest experiences in my career happened during an international sports event we were managing. We were hosting a large-scale competition, and everything was running smoothly until we realized that the local mascot, a beloved figure in the community, had gone missing. The mascot was crucial for the opening ceremony, and its disappearance caused quite a stir among the organizers and the crowd. We had to think on our feet and quickly organize a search party, which included athletes, staff, and even some local volunteers.

After a frantic few hours, we found the mascot locked in a storage room. It turned out that a group of mischievous kids had thought it would be funny to hide it there. The situation, although stressful at the time, ended up bringing everyone closer together. The athletes and staff bonded over the bizarre incident, and the opening ceremony went ahead with an even more enthusiastic atmosphere. This experience taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure and finding humor in unexpected situations.

How do you handle negative feedback when you receive it?

Handling negative feedback has always been an essential part of my growth as a sports executive. When I receive criticism, I try to view it as an opportunity to improve rather than a personal attack. For instance, there was a time when a client felt that our communication during contract negotiations was not as transparent as it should have been. Instead of getting defensive, I took a step back and evaluated our processes. I realized that there were indeed areas where we could improve our transparency and communication.

I immediately called a team meeting to address the issue and brainstorm solutions. We implemented new protocols for more regular and clear updates to our clients, ensuring they felt informed and involved every step of the way. This change not only improved our relationship with that particular client but also enhanced our overall service quality. By approaching negative feedback with an open mind and a willingness to learn, I’ve been able to turn potential setbacks into opportunities for growth and improvement.

What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve overcome in your life or career, and how did you do it?

One of the hardest obstacles I’ve faced in my career was the sudden loss of a key athlete due to a career-ending injury. This event was devastating not only for the athlete, who had a promising future ahead, but also for our entire team, who had invested so much in their development. The emotional and professional impact was significant, and it took a lot of effort to navigate through this difficult period. I had to provide strong support to the athlete, helping them transition to a new phase in their life while also maintaining the morale of our team.

To overcome this obstacle, I focused on resilience and adaptability. We worked closely with the athlete to explore new opportunities, leveraging their skills and passion for the sport in other capacities, such as coaching or sports commentary. Simultaneously, I encouraged our team to see this challenge as a learning experience. We implemented better injury prevention programs and mental health support systems for all our athletes, ensuring they had the resources needed to handle both physical and emotional setbacks. This comprehensive approach not only helped us recover from the immediate crisis but also strengthened our overall management practices, making us more resilient for the future.
