Interview with Brandon Gilkey

What keeps you motivated and excited about what you do?

In real estate, every day presents a new opportunity and a fresh challenge, and that’s what keeps me motivated. I’ve always been driven by the possibility of making a difference in people’s lives. When I help someone find their dream home or assist an investor in identifying a promising property, it’s not just a transaction; it’s a chance to positively impact someone’s future. One of the things I love most about my work is the diversity of people I get to interact with. From first-time homebuyers filled with hope and excitement to seasoned real estate investors looking for their next big opportunity, each client has a unique story, and I get to be a part of it. This constant interaction with people from all walks of life keeps my job exciting and fulfilling.

Another aspect that fuels my passion is the ever-evolving nature of the real estate market. There’s always something new to learn—whether it’s a change in market trends, emerging neighborhoods, or innovative technologies transforming the way we buy and sell properties. I thrive on this continuous learning curve and see it as a way to keep growing both personally and professionally. Additionally, being able to integrate my work with community service and mentorship provides an added layer of motivation. Knowing that my efforts are not only helping clients but also contributing to the community’s growth and development gives me a sense of purpose and satisfaction that extends beyond professional success. It’s this blend of personal connection, learning, and community impact that makes my work so rewarding.

What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy yourself during your downtime?

During my downtime, I love spending time with my family. Whether we’re hitting the golf course for a quick round, hiking one of the beautiful trails around Phoenix, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, these moments are what truly rejuvenate me. Golf, in particular, is a passion that allows me to disconnect from the daily hustle of real estate. There’s something about the tranquility of the course and the challenge of the game that helps me clear my mind and refocus. Plus, it’s a great way to bond with my kids and teach them some of the life skills I learned from sports, like patience and strategic thinking.

When I’m not with family or on the golf course, you might find me volunteering at local sports programs or mentoring young athletes. It’s a way for me to give back to the community that has supported me and helped shape who I am today. There’s immense satisfaction in guiding young people as they develop skills and values that will serve them well throughout their lives. Whether it’s on the field or off, seeing them grow and succeed is incredibly rewarding. These activities not only provide relaxation but also bring a sense of fulfillment and balance to my life. It’s important to me that I nurture my personal interests and relationships alongside my professional pursuits, as they are integral to maintaining a well-rounded and happy life.

What do you think is your single most crucial trait for success?

If I had to pinpoint a single trait that has been crucial to my success, it would be perseverance. The real estate industry is full of ups and downs, and the ability to stay the course, even when things get tough, is essential. My early years in sports taught me the importance of persistence—how to push through challenges and setbacks to reach a goal. That same mindset applies in real estate, where the market can be unpredictable, and deals sometimes fall through. I remember early in my career when the market took a downturn, and it felt like every effort was met with resistance. Instead of giving up, I doubled down on learning, adapting my strategies, and finding new ways to provide value to my clients.

Perseverance is not just about sticking with something when it gets difficult; it’s about learning and growing from every experience. Each challenge presents an opportunity to improve and refine your approach. For instance, when faced with a particularly challenging negotiation, I don’t see it as an insurmountable obstacle but as a chance to hone my skills and better understand the needs and motivations of all parties involved. This mindset has been invaluable in building a resilient career and business. It’s this relentless pursuit of improvement and unwavering commitment to my clients and community that drives me to succeed and make a meaningful impact through my work. Whether it’s closing a complex deal or mentoring a young athlete, perseverance is the trait that has guided me and will continue to do so in the future

What’s the weirdest thing that has happened in your career?

Real estate is an industry full of surprises, and I’ve had my fair share of unusual experiences. One of the weirdest moments in my career happened during a property showing. I was showing a beautiful historic home to a client, and everything was going smoothly until we entered the basement. We were greeted by a life-sized mannequin dressed in a clown costume sitting at a small table, complete with a teacup in its hand. It was one of those moments where you do a double-take because you can’t quite believe what you’re seeing.

We both burst into laughter, which immediately eased any tension and turned it into a memorable showing. The homeowner later explained that the mannequin was part of a Halloween setup that they hadn’t taken down yet. It was a bizarre encounter, but it taught me the importance of maintaining a sense of humor and adaptability in unexpected situations. It also reminded me of the human aspect of this business—how behind every property, there’s a story, often with quirks and surprises. These experiences add color to my work and serve as a reminder that no two days in real estate are ever the same. Embracing the unexpected is just part of the adventure.

How do you handle negative feedback when you receive it?

Negative feedback is never easy to hear, but I’ve learned to view it as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Early in my career, I received feedback from a client who felt that I wasn’t communicating as effectively as they had hoped. It was a tough pill to swallow at the time because I pride myself on being thorough and transparent. However, rather than dwelling on the negativity, I took a step back to reflect on their perspective and identify areas where I could enhance my communication skills.

I implemented changes such as more regular updates and being proactive in anticipating client questions. This experience taught me the value of listening actively and adapting based on constructive criticism. Today, I actively seek feedback from clients and colleagues, understanding that it can provide valuable insights into how I can better serve my clients and community. It’s important to approach negative feedback with an open mind and a willingness to learn, rather than taking it personally. By focusing on what can be improved, rather than what went wrong, I’ve been able to turn potentially negative situations into opportunities for personal and professional growth. This mindset has been instrumental in building a successful and resilient career in real estate.

What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve overcome in your life or career, and how did you do it?

One of the hardest obstacles I’ve faced was the transition from my initial career in community service and ministry to the world of real estate. It was a significant shift not only in terms of career focus but also in the skills and mindset required. In the early days, I struggled with the unpredictability and competitive nature of the real estate market. There were times when I doubted whether I had made the right decision, especially during periods when deals fell through, or the market slowed down.

What helped me overcome this challenge was my commitment to continuous learning and my ability to adapt. I immersed myself in understanding market trends, seeking mentorship from experienced real estate professionals, and expanding my network. My background in sports also played a crucial role, as it had instilled in me the importance of resilience and perseverance. I viewed each setback as a learning opportunity, gradually building my expertise and confidence in the field. Over time, I began to see the fruits of my efforts as I successfully closed deals and established a reputation for integrity and client satisfaction. This experience taught me that overcoming obstacles is about being willing to step out of your comfort zone, embracing change, and staying committed to your goals. It’s a lesson that continues to guide me in both my personal and professional life.
