Dr. Joseph Upton and Hormone Optimization in Washington

What Does an Anti-Aging Doctor Actually Do?

Dr. Joseph Upton didn’t start out in the world of hormones, peptides, or longevity. For almost ten years, he worked in traditional family medicine. Like most doctors, he focused on treating illness after it appeared. But something didn’t sit right with him.

“I was seeing good people who wanted to be well,” he said. “But our healthcare model was built around disease management, not health optimization.”

That shift in mindset changed everything. Today, Dr. Upton is one of the most respected anti-aging doctors in the country. He’s based in Washington, where he sees patients at LevyAesthetics in Bellevue and Newvue Medical in Kirkland. His approach is built around a single idea: don’t wait for things to break. Stay ahead of the curve.

How Dr. Upton Got Into Hormone Therapy and Longevity Science

Joseph Upton graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1988 and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1992. He completed a family medicine residency at the University of Washington and started practising soon after.

He followed the usual path, until he didn’t. After nearly a decade in primary care, he felt frustrated by how little time he had to actually help people feel better. Most visits were short. Most plans were reactive.

“I started asking bigger questions,” he said. “What if we could prevent the decline before it starts?”

So he made a big pivot. He got certified by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and started focusing on hormones, peptides, and functional testing. In 2014, he launched one of the first anti-aging programs endorsed by Suzanne Somers, a move that brought his work into the public eye.

What Is Hormone Optimization and Why Does It Matter?

Many people think anti-aging medicine is just about looking young. But for Dr. Upton, it’s about function.

“Hormones govern everything, energy, sleep, mood, metabolism,” he explains. “When they’re even slightly out of balance, life gets harder. People assume it’s just aging. But often, it’s something we can fix.”

He doesn’t do guesswork. Patients get full lab testing first. That includes hormone panels, nutrient levels, and metabolic markers. From there, he builds a personalized plan. That might involve bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, peptides, lifestyle coaching, and targeted supplements.

“It’s not about hitting normal ranges,” he said. “It’s about finding what works for that person.”

His patients range from busy professionals to people struggling with burnout or fatigue. Most report better sleep, clearer thinking, and more energy within a few weeks. Over time, they also see improvements in strength, mood, and libido.

How Peptides Support the Body’s Repair System

One of Dr. Upton’s favourite tools is peptide therapy. These are short chains of amino acids that tell the body to perform specific tasks, like repair tissue or boost human growth hormone.

“I use peptides to speed up healing, support fat loss, or improve mental clarity,” he said. “BPC-157, for example, is great for gut repair. Others can help with muscle building or inflammation.”

Peptides are still new to a lot of people, but Dr. Upton believes they’re one of the most exciting frontiers in modern medicine. He combines them with other treatments to get stronger and longer-lasting results.

Why Healthspan Matters More Than Lifespan

Dr. Upton talks a lot about healthspan. It’s not just how long you live. It’s how long you stay strong, sharp, and independent.

“Aging happens. But how you age is up to you,” he said. “With the right mix of hormones, lifestyle, and mindset, you can stay functional and focused for much longer.”

He sees aging as a biological process that can be influenced, not something that just happens to you. His practice focuses on helping patients maintain their physical, mental, and emotional performance for as long as possible.

His Work at LevyAesthetics and Newvue Medical

In 2025, Dr. Upton joined LevyAesthetics, reuniting with his longtime colleague Dr. Daniel Levy. The two had previously worked together at PRO Medical for nearly 20 years. Their shared goal? Combine aesthetic care with internal health.

“LevyAesthetics has always helped people look their best,” said Dr. Upton. “Now we’re also helping them feel their best.”

He also works with patients at Newvue Medical, where his focus is preventive care and hormone optimization for men and women.

Services at both clinics include:

  • Comprehensive hormone testing
  • Customized hormone therapy
  • Peptide protocols
  • Functional diagnostics
  • Supplement planning

What Keeps Him Motivated After 30+ Years in Medicine

Even after three decades in healthcare, Dr. Upton still feels excited about his work.

“When someone tells me they finally feel like themselves again, that means everything,” he said. “I’ve seen marriages improve, careers reignite, and people get their lives back. That’s why I do this.”

He stays up to date by attending clinical forums, reading peer-reviewed research, and participating in professional groups like the Academy of Preventive and Innovative Medicine and Age Management Medicine Group.

But more than anything, he stays grounded by listening to his patients.

“I don’t just look at labs,” he said. “I ask how they’re sleeping, how they feel at work, how their relationships are going. Those things matter.”

You Don’t Have to Wait to Feel Better

Dr. Upton’s message is simple. You don’t have to wait until things get bad to make a change.

“The best time to invest in your health is before there’s a crisis,” he said. “We can’t stop time, but we can improve how you move through it.”

For anyone feeling stuck, tired, or just not like themselves, his advice is to start with education. Ask questions. Get tested. And find someone who listens.

Because aging doesn’t have to mean decline. Sometimes, it’s the start of a new chapter.
