After completing his medical degree, Dr. Franco continued his training with a General Surgery Residency at McGill University and a Urology Residency at the University of Toronto. His passion for advancing surgical techniques led him to pursue fellowships in Urogynecology and Pelvic Floor Reconstruction at LSU in New Orleans and Advanced Urologic Laparoscopic Surgery at UC Irvine.

What keeps you motivated and excited about what you do?
I’ve always been driven by my desire to help people. Throughout my career, seeing patients recover and regain their health has been incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I can make a difference in someone’s life keeps me motivated. The field of urology is also constantly changing, with new techniques and technology emerging. That challenge—staying on top of advancements—has always excited me. I enjoy learning and applying new methods to improve patient outcomes.
Mentoring young doctors has also kept me motivated. Watching them grow and succeed in their own careers gives me a sense of pride. It reminds me of the impact we can have, not just on patients, but on the medical community as a whole. Even in retirement, I stay curious and engaged with the latest developments.
What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy yourself during your downtime?
When I want to relax, I often go for a long bike ride. Cycling helps me clear my mind and stay active, which is important for my health. I enjoy being outdoors, especially in the beautiful surroundings of Southwest Florida. There’s something about the quiet and rhythm of cycling that puts me at ease. It’s my way of disconnecting from the stresses of life and enjoying the moment.
Reading is another way I unwind. I like to stay up-to-date with medical journals, but I also enjoy reading fiction. It’s a nice escape, and I find it refreshing. Spending time with my family, especially over a good meal, is another favorite way to relax. The simple things in life, like good food and conversation, bring me a lot of joy.
What do you think is your single most crucial trait for success?
I believe persistence is the most important trait for success. In medicine, you face a lot of challenges, and things don’t always go as planned. But you can’t give up when things get tough. Persistence is what helps you push through difficult moments and keep working toward your goals. Whether it’s a complex surgery or a research project, sticking with it is key.
I’ve also learned that persistence isn’t just about working hard. It’s about being patient with yourself and others. Success doesn’t come overnight. It takes time, effort, and the willingness to learn from mistakes. This trait has served me well throughout my career and life.
What’s the weirdest thing that has happened in your career?
One of the strangest moments in my career happened during a surgery. I was performing a routine procedure when we discovered something unexpected—a small foreign object that shouldn’t have been there. It turned out to be a piece of metal from a previous, unrelated surgery the patient had years ago. The patient had no idea, and it wasn’t causing any issues. It was definitely an unusual find.
Another odd experience was when a patient insisted they had been “cursed,” and that was the cause of their medical problems. While I don’t believe in curses, it reminded me how important it is to listen to patients’ concerns, even if they seem far-fetched. You never know what you’ll encounter in this field, but it’s all part of the job.
How do you handle negative feedback when you receive it?
When I receive negative feedback, my first step is to listen carefully. It’s easy to get defensive, but I’ve learned that negative feedback can often help you grow. I try to understand where the other person is coming from and reflect on whether there’s something I can improve. If it’s constructive criticism, I use it as an opportunity to get better at what I do.
Sometimes, the feedback isn’t fair or accurate. In those cases, I still try to remain calm and professional. I address the concern politely and explain my side if needed. Not everyone will agree with you, but handling negative feedback with grace is important. In the end, feedback—whether good or bad—has helped me become a better doctor and mentor.
What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve overcome in your life or career, and how did you do it?
One of the hardest obstacles I faced was during my residency. Balancing the demands of medical training with personal life was incredibly tough. The hours were long, and the pressure was intense. At times, it felt overwhelming, and I questioned whether I could handle it. But I kept reminding myself why I started in the first place—to help people. That gave me the strength to keep going.
I also leaned on my mentors and colleagues for support. Talking to people who had been through it before helped me see that I wasn’t alone in the struggle. Over time, I developed better time management skills and learned to handle the stress. Looking back, it was those tough times that shaped me into the doctor I became.
