How a San Diego graduate turned early insurance hustle into a 20+ year run of tech-driven businesses and strategic consulting
Krishen Iyer has spent over two decades in insurance, marketing, and consulting. He’s launched fast-growing companies, developed lead generation systems, and helped others grow their businesses. Along the way, he’s stayed focused on solving hard problems with smart processes.
“I didn’t want to build companies that just look good,” he says. “I wanted to build systems that work, and can scale.”
Let’s look at how he got there.

Early Days in Fresno
Iyer grew up in Fresno, California and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. While still in college, he started working in benefits and insurance.
“I learned fast that most of the industry was built on outdated systems,” he says. “So I started thinking about ways to fix that.”
In 2002, he launched IHS Insurance Services, followed by Name My Premium (NMP) Insurance Services in 2009. These early ventures gave him hands-on experience in marketing, fulfillment, and customer acquisition.
Breakout Growth with NMP Insurance Services
NMP Insurance Services became one of Iyer’s biggest early successes. Between 2012 and 2015, the company saw 236% growth, reaching $4.3 million in revenue. In 2015, it earned a spot on the Inc. 5000 list, ranked #17 in Insurance and #234 overall in California.
“We had a 25-person call center,” Iyer says. “Everything was built around performance, tracking, lead quality, close rates. We were obsessed with what worked.”
He later sold NMP and started planning his next move.
Launching Managed Benefits Services
In 2016, Iyer founded Managed Benefits Services, based in Encinitas, California. The goal: build a better platform for health and dental insurance lead generation.
Instead of relying on third-party tools, Iyer and his team built a system in-house. It included capture pages, traffic scoring, dynamic campaign templates, and real-time lead verification.
“It wasn’t about more leads,” Iyer says. “It was about the right leads, for the right buyer.”
The platform helps clients identify cost-per-acquisition targets and matches them with quality, verified traffic. Managed Benefits quickly stood out for its multi-layer filtering and campaign control.
Expanding Through MAIS Consulting
By 2019, Iyer had launched MAIS Consulting to advise other companies on marketing strategy, business development, and growth systems.
Through MAIS, he works with clients across different verticals, insurance, contracting, health services, to help them refine how they attract and keep customers.
“I don’t want to hand out playbooks,” he says. “I want to help people build the tools themselves.”
MAIS Consulting also plays a role in supporting philanthropic work, especially Iyer’s nonprofit efforts.
New Ventures in Real Estate and Holding Companies
Beyond insurance and consulting, Iyer is active in real estate development. He runs Iyer Real Estate, an investment holding company with residential and commercial projects in Visalia and Reedley, California.
He’s also in the process of launching Iyer CRSI, a consulting, real estate, and insurance holding company aimed at integrating financial, property, and advisory services under one umbrella.
Philanthropy and Giving Back
Krishen Iyer is the founder of 4 Humans Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit aimed at serving underserved communities. The organisation focuses on supporting veterans, children, and health equity.
He also contributes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project, and has led insurance-focused seminars to educate industry professionals.
“When business goes well, you owe it to others to give something back,” he says.
How He Works
Iyer’s style is hands-on. He builds infrastructure from the ground up, tests every assumption, and stays involved in daily operations.
He doesn’t use vague frameworks. Instead, he focuses on real-world data, customer behavior, and system performance.
“We never assume something works just because it looks good on paper,” Iyer says. “We test it, tweak it, and test it again.”
With Iyer CRSI in development and multiple ventures running in parallel, Iyer shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to consult, invest, and build.
“It’s not about the next big idea,” he says. “It’s about doing the small things right, every single day.”

Interview with Krishen Iyer
You’ve built several companies from the ground up. What’s the first thing you look for when starting something new?
I look at what’s broken. What’s inefficient? What’s being ignored? Then I think about how a system could solve that. I don’t chase trends, I focus on solving real problems with structure and tracking.
What made NMP Insurance Services grow so fast compared to your earlier ventures?
We built it like a machine. We had a 25-person call center, and we tracked everything, conversion rates, traffic sources, cost per lead. Nothing was left to guesswork. And we hired people who were coachable and fast learners.
What’s the biggest mistake you see other founders make?
They scale too early or with the wrong systems. If your back-end doesn’t support growth, more sales just means more problems. Test everything at a small level first, then build out from there.
How do you stay focused when you’re juggling so many businesses and projects?
I block time. I stay close to the numbers. And I revisit goals weekly. It sounds basic, but if you don’t track, you drift.
What’s one business principle you always come back to?
Match the right offer with the right person at the right time. Whether it’s leads, real estate, or consulting, it’s all matchmaking. The closer you get that fit, the more efficient everything becomes.
You’re involved in philanthropy now too. What motivated that?
If you’ve built something that works, there’s a point where you ask: who else can this help? That’s where 4 Humans came from. I wanted to use what I’ve learned to give back with intention.
