Kristie Nicodemus has spent more than two decades in the employee benefits industry. Today, she works as a Senior Business Development Advisor at Mercer in Atlanta, Georgia. But her story starts far from corporate boardrooms. It begins in Roanoke, Virginia, with a childhood shaped by sports, family values, and a mix of entrepreneurial and corporate influence.

Early Years
Nicodemus was born in Roanoke and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. Her father, Ben “Nick” Nicodemus, was an executive at AT&T. Her mother, Sheron Nicodemus, ran her own interior design business. This mix of corporate discipline and entrepreneurial creativity would shape her approach to work.
She moved during high school, spending time in Richmond, Littleton, Colorado, and LaGrange, Georgia. She played tennis and basketball, a detail she credits with building resilience.
“I learned early on that discipline and teamwork can carry you through tough situations,” she recalls.
Nicodemus went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications with a minor in Fashion from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Starting Out in Sales
Her career began in sales roles at AT&T (1997–2000) and Broadwing Communications (1998–2001). These early years taught her how to listen to clients and understand business needs.
“Listening well is key. People will tell you exactly what they need if you pay attention,” she says.
Two Decades at OneDigital
In 2001, Nicodemus joined Northwestern Benefit Corporation, which later became part of OneDigital. She stayed for more than 22 years, building a career in business development. She worked directly with companies to design benefits strategies that supported their employees and budgets.
Her approach was grounded in relationships. “I’ve always believed in being responsive and giving clients the resources they need,” she explains.
Her work was recognized in the industry. She was named a NAIFA Top Benefit Advisor in 2020 and one of the NAIFA Top Women Advisors of Atlanta in 2023.
Joining Mercer
In June 2024, Nicodemus moved to Mercer as a Senior Business Development Advisor. Her focus is on health benefits and wellness consulting for medium to large employers. The work draws on her decades of experience while keeping her learning.
“This industry changes fast. Adaptability is critical if you want to stay ahead,” she notes.
Philosophy on Success
Nicodemus has a clear idea of what success means. “It’s living a life that aligns with your values while making progress toward your goals,” she says.
For her, it’s about more than professional achievement. Work-life balance, financial stability, and helping others are part of the equation. She also places a high value on kindness.
“Being kind doesn’t mean avoiding hard conversations,” she explains. “It means leading with integrity and humanity, even when it’s difficult.”
Overcoming Challenges
She has faced self-doubt and moments of uncertainty. Her solution has been action. “Confidence comes from doing,” she says.
In the past, she struggled with work-life balance. Over time, she learned to set boundaries and prioritize her health and relationships. Financial challenges early in life taught her the value of saving, budgeting, and investing.
There were also moments when kindness and empathy were not valued in her work environment. She chose to stay true to her approach. “It paid off in trust and stronger connections,” she says.
Community and Home Life
Outside of work, Nicodemus lives in Atlanta with her husband, architect John Sitton, and their two sons. The couple’s renovated Grant Park home has been featured in lifestyle media for its design and thoughtful details.
Her free time often includes fitness activities, traveling, and watching her boys play soccer. She is a member of the Grant Park Conservancy and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and volunteers at The Nicholas House, a nonprofit serving homeless families.
Lessons Learned
When asked about the most important qualities for success in her industry, she lists resilience, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and listening skills.
“Resilience helps you bounce back. Adaptability keeps you moving forward. Emotional intelligence helps you connect with people. And listening well? That’s how you understand the real problem you’re trying to solve,” she explains.
Her career path shows how long-term dedication, steady growth, and a values-based approach can build both professional credibility and personal fulfillment.
Interview with Kristie Nicodemus
You’ve spent more than two decades in employee benefits. What drew you to this field?
It was the people. I like building relationships and solving real problems for clients. Employee benefits touch every person in a company, so you see the direct impact of your work.
You’ve said that listening is one of the most important skills in your career. Why?
Listening well lets you understand the real issue behind a question or request. People will tell you what they need if you pay close attention. That’s how you provide the right solution instead of just the quickest answer.
How do you define success for yourself?
It’s living in alignment with my values, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and helping others. Financial stability matters too, but I see it as a tool to create freedom and choices, not the end goal.
What’s one challenge you’ve had to overcome in your career?
Self-doubt. I overcame it by taking action and proving to myself I was worthy. Confidence doesn’t come first, it comes after you step up and try.
What qualities are most important for success in your industry?
Resilience, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and listening skills. Those four will help you handle change, connect with people, and keep growing.
What advice would you give someone starting out in business development?
Be curious, be consistent, and don’t take shortcuts. Relationships take time to build. If you treat people well and follow through, your reputation will carry you further than any quick win.
