For Lee Lorenzen, the development of clustered water technology was never purely scientific — it began in a hospital room and continued for decades through doubt, perseverance, and faith. The result is a body of research that has reached more than 300,000 people in Japan and continues to evolve under his leadership at Cluster Solutions in Rancho Santa Margarita, California.

A Discovery Born Close to Home

The science began with loss. In 1985, Stephanie Smith — the woman Lee Lorenzen had married nine years earlier — fell seriously ill. What followed was years of watching someone central to his life navigate a deteriorating health condition that conventional frameworks seemed poorly equipped to address. For Lorenzen, already deep in biomedical research and consulting, it was not a departure from his work. It became the work.

Lorenzen had been building toward this moment for over a decade. After earning his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, he completed graduate studies in biology at California State University, Fullerton, and pursued advanced research under Hoang Van Duc, M.D. He had taught biology at Chapman College in Orange, California, conducted research at UC Irvine’s Department of Pharmacology, and spent more than a decade in biomedical consulting. By the mid-1980s, the science was his life. But the science, as he encountered it, wasn’t answering the right questions.

What his wife’s illness forced him to do was look elsewhere.

Water Clusters and a Nobel Prize Laureate

The path to clustered water technology began in a library. While reviewing research materials, Lorenzen encountered a text by Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi — the Nobel laureate whose 1962 work on cell water opened a line of inquiry that had largely gone unexplored in mainstream science. The reading was a turning point. It offered a framework that made sense of something Lorenzen had been turning over for years: the relationship between water structure and cellular function.

From there, research led him to the Healing Spring of Lourdes in France, where he found evidence of naturally occurring water clusters — a phenomenon he would later identify at ten additional healing springs around the world, each sharing similar geological characteristics. The pattern was striking enough to study seriously. Lorenzen began developing methods to replicate the conditions that produced these water clusters under controlled circumstances.

He and his wife became the first subjects. Slowly, their health improved. The experiment became a conviction. The conviction became a company.

Building Cluster Solutions

In 1989, Lorenzen founded Cluster Solutions in California to formally develop and commercialize the technology he had spent years researching. The company was structured around one core idea: that the molecular structure of water could be stabilized in a way that made it more effective at the cellular level, and that this had meaningful implications for human health.

He applied for and received multiple U.S. patents — including 5,711,950 and 6,033,678 — establishing intellectual ownership of the methods he had developed. The patents were not simply a legal formality. They represented the accumulated result of years of independent research conducted in the face of significant skepticism from institutions and industry alike.

That skepticism was real and sustained. When Lorenzen first brought his research to major institutions, the response was largely dismissive. The idea that water’s molecular configuration could have a measurable effect on health outcomes was, for many, a step too far from the prevailing model. He kept working.

Japan and Fifteen Years of Clinical Research

The reception in Japan was different. Researchers and physicians there recognized the potential of Lorenzen’s work and invited sustained collaboration. For the next fifteen years, Lorenzen worked with a network of Japanese doctors and scientists to document the effects of clustered water on thousands of patients across multiple clinical settings. The results were compiled into nine books published in Japan. Today, more than 300,000 people in Japan regularly consume clustered water solutions.

In 2004, the work took another step forward when Dr. Robert I. Bender, then Chairman of the NHT Global Medical Advisory Board, collaborated with Lorenzen on the development of Cluster X2 — a liquid concentrate formulated to produce stable water clusters when mixed with distilled water.

The Microsoft Alumni Foundation recognized Lorenzen’s contributions to research related to AIDS and diabetes in 2011, one of the few external acknowledgments of work that had otherwise been conducted largely outside mainstream institutional channels.

The Work Continues

More than three decades after founding Cluster Solutions, Lorenzen remains in the role he established for himself in 1989. He continues to lead the company’s research and product development, working alongside trusted physicians and scientists to refine existing applications and develop new ones. His focus is on improving functionality, understanding outcomes, and identifying the practical implications of clustered water science for everyday use.

Outside the lab and the conference room, his life is shaped by the same things that shaped the research. He spends time with his family and grandchildren. He hikes. He describes faith and prayer as central to how he sustains himself through long stretches of scientific uncertainty. The two registers — scientific rigor and personal belief — have coexisted in his work for decades.

What drives him, he has said, is straightforward: feedback from those who use the products, and the prospect of continued improvement. For Lorenzen, the measure of the work is not institutional recognition but whether it results in something that genuinely changes the experience of the people who encounter it.

Lorenzen’s career sits at the intersection of personal experience and scientific inquiry in a way that is unusual even among independent researchers. The technology he built emerged directly from a personal crisis, was developed in the face of institutional indifference, survived fifteen years of collaborative clinical research in a foreign country, and now operates as a going concern from Southern California.

The story of Cluster Solutions is, in that sense, inseparable from the story of Lee Lorenzen — a researcher who grew up in Northern California as one of eight children, found his way into biology and pharmacology, married young, faced something he could not solve with available tools, and spent the better part of four decades building better ones.

The work is not finished. At Cluster Solutions, it rarely is.
