From Municipal Finance to Property Management—Built on Discipline, Faith, and Experience
Roberto Mejill Tellado doesn’t talk much about ambition. He talks about responsibility. Growing up in Guánica, Puerto Rico, he learned early that hard work wasn’t a choice—it was a requirement.
“I grew up with very little. Poverty wasn’t just around me—it shaped how I think,” he says. “It made me focus on what matters: doing the job right and never giving up.”
Today, Roberto lives in Weeki Wachee, Florida. He runs two companies—RWM Consultants Inc and RWM Real Property Inc—but his career started decades earlier in Puerto Rico’s public sector, where he built a reputation for financial order, consistency, and results.
A Foundation in Public Administration and Finance
Roberto earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, San Germán Campus. He graduated cum laude in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and Economics, then completed an MBA in Finance in 1992.
“I wasn’t the loudest person in the room,” he says. “But I always knew how to break a problem down and find a plan that worked.”
That skill—clear thinking under pressure—became his signature in public service.
Managing Municipal Budgets in Guayanilla
In 1989, he was appointed Director of Finance for the Municipality of Guayanilla. For three years, he oversaw financial reporting, budgets, and revenue planning for the city. It was a hands-on role, and it gave him real-world experience applying everything he had learned in school.
“You can know theory, but it’s different when you’re responsible for the budget of a whole municipality,” he says. “You need to know the numbers, yes—but also how decisions affect people.”
A Role in Government with Statewide Reach
From 1993 to 2000, Roberto took on a broader challenge: he became President of the Puerto Rico Senate Commission for Municipal Affairs. The role put him at the center of government coordination between the island’s municipalities and the central government.
He didn’t just push papers. He built systems that helped cities follow laws, meet budget guidelines, and communicate with state agencies. The job required attention to detail—and the ability to see patterns others missed.
“People think government is slow because of laziness. But it’s usually because systems don’t talk to each other,” he says. “I worked to fix that.”
A Shift to Consulting—But the Same Mission
After leaving public office, Roberto founded RWM Consultants Inc in 2001. The goal was simple: help Puerto Rican municipalities manage their finances better. He offered consulting on everything from tax collection to budgeting to account reconciliation.
From 2006 to 2017, he led the company full-time, diving deep into departmental budgets, financial statements, and expenditure reviews.
“It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was essential,” he says. “When towns don’t have their finances in order, everything suffers—education, public safety, infrastructure.”
Expanding Into Florida Real Estate
In 2015, Roberto relocated to Florida and started RWM Real Property Inc, focusing on property management. His role covers day-to-day oversight of residential properties—handling maintenance, tenant coordination, budgeting, and operations.
He also led LOLA RWM Inc, a childcare services company, from 2015 to 2022 in New Port Richey, Florida. It might seem like a big shift from government finance, but for Roberto, it made sense.
“Childcare centers need structure—scheduling, staffing, budgeting,” he explains. “It’s the same skills, just applied in a different setting.”
Staying Hands-On, Staying Practical
Roberto holds a Florida Child Care and Education Program Director Credential (2019–2024) and a Food Handler Certification. While others might delegate, he prefers to stay directly involved. He takes pride in maintaining properties, cooking, and even doing yardwork himself.
“I’m not the kind of person who just gives orders,” he says. “If there’s a problem, I want to know how it works and how to fix it.”
Faith and Focus in the Face of Challenges
Throughout his life, Roberto says he’s been driven by two things: his faith in God and a strong sense of justice. He’s honest about setbacks—times when friends abandoned him, or when challenges felt overwhelming.
“But God never leaves you,” he says. “That’s where I get my strength.”
When asked about leadership, he doesn’t talk about charisma. He talks about realism.
“Know what you’re capable of. Then analyze the problem. Make a short-term strategy. Work hard. Stay grounded. And trust that, with faith, things will work out.”
A Legacy of Order, Strategy, and Service
Roberto Mejill Tellado’s story isn’t about chasing titles. It’s about systems that work, communities that function, and a life lived with purpose. From managing budgets in Puerto Rican municipalities to overseeing properties in Florida, his career has stayed true to one thing: fixing what’s broken with focus, humility, and effort.
“Life is work,” he says. “But it’s good work when you do it with faith and integrity.”
For Roberto, that’s enough. And it’s been enough to build a legacy that still matters—whether in city halls or quiet neighborhoods across Florida.
