Interview with Steven Gillhouse

Steven Gillhouse

What keeps you motivated and excited about what you do?

What really keeps me going is knowing that I can make a difference, both in my job and in the lives of the people around me. I love seeing my team grow, hit their goals, and feel proud of what they’ve accomplished. There’s something incredibly satisfying about helping others succeed and knowing that I’ve played a part in that journey. When I see how our hard work translates into real results—happy customers, increased sales, or even just a better working environment—it gives me a sense of purpose and drives me to keep pushing forward. It’s not just about the numbers or hitting sales targets; it’s about building relationships and making sure our clients and team members feel supported and valued.

I also stay motivated because I genuinely enjoy learning and taking on new challenges. The sales world is always changing, and I like figuring out new ways to connect with customers and adapt to what they need. I love that every day brings a new challenge, whether it’s finding a creative solution for a client, helping a team member grow, or developing a new strategy. I feel excited when I see that my work is making a positive impact, and it reminds me why I chose this path in the first place.

What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy yourself during your downtime?

For me, getting outside is one of the best ways to relax and recharge. I love hiking and spending time in nature—it helps clear my mind and gives me a chance to step away from work for a bit. There’s something about being surrounded by trees, fresh air, and the sounds of nature that helps me unwind and put things in perspective. It’s also a great way to stay active, which is important to me because I believe that taking care of my body helps keep my mind sharp and focused.

I also really enjoy golfing, especially when I get to do it with friends or family. It’s a fun way to challenge myself while still taking it easy, and it gives me a chance to connect with others in a more relaxed setting. Whether I’m out on the golf course or just spending time with my loved ones, these moments help me reset and come back to work feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes next. I’ve learned that it’s important to find balance and make time for the things that bring me joy.

What do you think is your single most crucial trait for success?

If I had to pick one, I’d say my most crucial trait is my ability to build strong relationships. In my experience, sales is all about people—it’s about understanding their needs, building trust, and showing that you genuinely care about helping them succeed. I’ve always made it a point to connect with my team, clients, and partners on a personal level. I believe that when people feel valued and understood, they’re more likely to work with you and support your goals.

Being a good listener is a big part of that. I take the time to hear what others are saying, whether it’s a customer sharing their challenges or a team member offering feedback. This helps me see things from their perspective and find solutions that work for everyone. Over the years, this approach has helped me build a reputation as someone who’s not just in it for the sale but truly wants to make a positive impact. And I believe that’s been the key to my success.

What’s the weirdest thing that has happened in your career?

One of the weirdest things that ever happened in my career was during a major sales presentation. We had spent weeks preparing to pitch a big client, and everything was going smoothly—until the power went out in the building. There we were, in a pitch-black room with no slides, no lights, and no technology to back us up. It was definitely one of those “what now?” moments that you just can’t prepare for.

Instead of panicking, I took a deep breath and decided to keep going, using the time to talk with the client about their needs and challenges, face to face, without all the bells and whistles. Surprisingly, it turned out to be one of the most honest and engaging conversations I’ve ever had with a client. We were able to connect on a much more personal level, and they appreciated that we didn’t let the situation throw us off track. In the end, we closed the deal, and it became a great lesson in staying calm and adaptable, no matter how strange things get.

How do you handle negative feedback when you receive it?

I’ve learned over the years that negative feedback is just a part of growth, both personally and professionally. When I receive it, my first instinct is to take a step back and really listen to what’s being said, even if it stings a bit. It’s not always easy to hear, but I try to remind myself that feedback, even when it’s critical, is an opportunity to improve. I don’t take it personally; instead, I see it as a chance to learn and get better at what I do.

After I’ve had some time to process the feedback, I ask myself how I can use it to make positive changes. Whether it’s adjusting my approach, improving a skill, or addressing a gap I might not have noticed, I always try to take action. I’ve found that being open to feedback not only helps me grow but also shows others that I’m willing to learn and adapt. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being committed to becoming the best version of yourself.

What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve overcome in your life or career, and how did you do it?

One of the hardest obstacles I’ve faced was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our sales operations were heavily impacted, and we couldn’t visit clients in person or bring them into our plants for over a year. It was a huge challenge, and I had to rethink how we could continue to build and maintain relationships with our customers. Instead of seeing it as a setback, I saw it as an opportunity to be creative and find new ways to connect.

We started conducting virtual training sessions, lead generation events, and even found ways to make these interactions engaging and valuable for our clients. It wasn’t easy, and there were moments when I wasn’t sure if it would work, but I knew we had to adapt to keep moving forward. In the end, not only did we manage to maintain our customer relationships, but we also discovered new ways to add value that we hadn’t considered before. This experience taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and staying focused on solutions, even when the path forward isn’t clear.
