Interview with Sunil Jagani
What keeps you motivated and excited about what you do?
What keeps me motivated is the constant evolution of technology and its potential to solve complex problems. Every day, we’re presented with new challenges, whether it’s figuring out how to streamline a business process, integrate cutting-edge AI into a client’s operations, or simply finding better ways to make systems more efficient. Technology is a tool, and I’ve always been passionate about understanding how to use it in ways that truly benefit people and organizations. When I founded AllianceTek, my goal was to help businesses unlock their potential through smart technology solutions, and seeing that impact keeps me excited about what we do. Watching a business improve its efficiency, reduce waste, or expand its capabilities because of the work we’ve done is incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder that we’re making a difference, and that drives me to keep innovating.
Another source of motivation for me is the team at AllianceTek. I’ve always believed that a company is an ecosystem, and when everything is balanced, it thrives. We have a global team of talented professionals who bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the table every day. That collaborative spirit and the opportunity to work with such diverse minds keeps me energized. It’s not just about solving technical problems; it’s about learning from each other and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve together. Technology may evolve rapidly, but the principles of teamwork, continuous improvement, and creative problem-solving remain constant, and that’s what makes this work so fulfilling for me.
What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy yourself during your downtime?
Balancing work with downtime is essential for me, especially given the fast pace of running a global business. When I’m not focused on AllianceTek, I turn to activities that help me unwind and recharge. One of my go-to ways to relax is golfing. There’s something meditative about being out on the course, where I can disconnect from the constant demands of work and focus on the game. Golf requires a combination of strategy, focus, and patience—traits that I value in my professional life as well. It gives me a sense of balance, both physically and mentally, and allows me to clear my head.
I also enjoy spending time with my family. Being a husband and father is a big part of who I am, and I find great joy in those moments when we can spend time together, whether it’s a family dinner or a weekend outing. My son is growing up fast, and I make it a point to be present in his life, guiding him while also learning from his perspective on things. Additionally, reading has always been a favorite way for me to relax. I’m particularly drawn to books on personal development, business strategies, and anything related to the Kaizen philosophy, which emphasizes continuous improvement. Reading gives me a chance to reflect, gain new insights, and often sparks ideas that I can bring back into my work. Ultimately, finding balance through these activities helps me stay grounded and keeps me ready for whatever challenges come next.
What do you think is your single most crucial trait for success?
If I had to choose one trait that has been most crucial to my success, it would be having an innovation mindset. From the start of my career, I’ve always been focused on finding creative solutions to problems, whether it was in the constantly evolving tech industry or in building AllianceTek from the ground up. The ability to think outside the box and embrace new technologies has been key. I’ve never seen challenges as roadblocks; rather, they’re opportunities to innovate and rethink how we approach a problem. Innovation isn’t just about creating something new—it’s about improving what already exists and looking at things from a different perspective.
This mindset has also shaped how I lead. Running a global team requires a deep understanding of not only technology but also how people and processes interact. I encourage my team to constantly look for new ways to solve problems and streamline our operations. Innovation isn’t limited to products or technology; it’s about how we work and how we serve our clients. I believe that fostering an environment where ideas are encouraged and experimentation is valued leads to breakthroughs. At AllianceTek, we don’t wait for change to come to us—we actively seek it. This approach keeps us ahead of the curve and allows us to continuously grow and deliver exceptional results. In my experience, innovation is the catalyst for both personal and professional success.
What’s the weirdest thing that has happened in your career?
One of the strangest moments in my career happened when we were working on a project for a client in the financial sector. We had developed a highly advanced system to streamline their customer service operations, and everything seemed to be going according to plan in the beta testing phase—until the system started answering customer inquiries with completely irrelevant information. For example, someone would ask about their account balance, and the system would start talking about local weather conditions! It turned out to be a bizarre glitch in the natural language processing model we had integrated, which somehow began pulling data from unrelated sources due to a small misconfiguration.
It was a strange and somewhat comical moment, but it taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of thoroughly testing systems, especially when they involve complex AI. We were able to fix the issue relatively quickly, but the incident definitely made its rounds in the office as one of those “I can’t believe this actually happened” moments. The experience underscored the fact that technology can be unpredictable, and while we strive for perfection, there will always be moments that remind us we’re dealing with systems created by imperfect humans. It also reinforced the importance of remaining calm under pressure—because in the world of tech, weird things will inevitably happen, and it’s how you respond that matters most.
How do you handle negative feedback when you receive it?
Negative feedback is inevitable, especially when you’re leading a company and managing a variety of projects. Over the years, I’ve learned to view it as an opportunity for growth rather than something to take personally. In the early stages of my career, I’ll admit it was difficult to hear criticism, particularly when I had put so much effort into a project. But as AllianceTek grew and I took on more leadership responsibilities, I realized that constructive criticism is essential for improvement. In fact, some of the best lessons I’ve learned came from negative feedback—whether from clients, colleagues, or even employees.
When I receive negative feedback, my first step is to listen carefully and understand the root of the issue. I ask questions to clarify and ensure I have a full picture of what went wrong. Once I have that understanding, I focus on finding a solution. One thing I’ve always believed is that every problem has a solution—it’s just a matter of looking at it from the right angle. I also make it a point to discuss the feedback openly with my team, encouraging a culture where we can learn from mistakes and move forward. Addressing feedback head-on and with a constructive mindset not only helps improve the quality of our work but also strengthens relationships with clients and colleagues alike.
What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve overcome in your life or career, and how did you do it?
The hardest obstacle I’ve faced in my career was in the early days of AllianceTek. When I first started the company in 2004, we had limited resources, and the tech landscape was rapidly evolving. We were trying to establish ourselves in a highly competitive market while building a team from scratch. There were times when we faced serious financial challenges, especially when some of our initial projects didn’t go as planned. I remember there being moments when I questioned whether the company would survive, but giving up was never an option for me. I had a vision for AllianceTek, and I was determined to see it through.
To overcome these challenges, I relied heavily on my ability to adapt and learn quickly. I re-evaluated our business model, focused on building long-term relationships with clients, and invested in the development of a strong, collaborative team. We made sure to prioritize quality and customer satisfaction, which helped us slowly build a reputation for reliability and innovation. Another key factor in overcoming these early obstacles was my belief in continuous improvement. I adopted the Kaizen approach, which emphasizes small, incremental changes, and applied it to every aspect of the business. By staying focused, remaining flexible, and continuously learning, we were able to not only overcome the initial challenges but also build a company that is thriving today.
