What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy yourself during your downtime?
When I need to unwind, spending time with my family is my go-to. We love hosting backyard barbecues, just enjoying good food and each other’s company under the stars. Those simple moments of laughter and connection help me recharge. Being around family reminds me why I work so hard—it gives me balance and perspective.
Another way I relax is by spending time in nature, especially in Hawaii. The peacefulness of the ocean and the lush landscapes there provide a creative reset for me. I’ll often go for walks or just sit by the water and let my mind wander. It’s where I find some of my best inspiration and ideas for future designs. Whether I’m with family or in nature, it’s those quiet, calm moments that help me refuel.
What do you think is your single most crucial trait for success?
I think the most important trait for success in my field is attention to detail. In design, every small element matters—from the texture of a fabric to the placement of a light fixture. I believe that paying attention to those tiny details is what sets great design apart from good design. Clients may not always know exactly what they want, but they notice when a space just feels right, and that comes from getting the details perfect.
Another crucial trait is being open to collaboration. No design project happens in isolation; it’s a team effort between the client, the designers, and the craftsmen who bring it to life. Being able to listen, take feedback, and adjust ideas as needed is key to delivering a successful project. You can’t be rigid in this industry—you need to balance your vision with the client’s needs and trust the expertise of those you work with.
What’s the weirdest thing that has happened in your career?
One of the weirdest things that’s happened to me involved a project where the client had some very unique requests. They wanted a living room entirely themed around their favorite TV show—down to furniture that replicated what was on the set. At first, I thought they were joking, but they were completely serious. It was a fun challenge to bring that to life while still keeping it functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Another strange moment came when I was working on a commercial project, and halfway through construction, the building’s power was knocked out by a freak lightning storm. We had to do parts of the work in near darkness for a couple of days until it was resolved. It’s one of those moments that reminds you no matter how much you plan, some things are completely out of your control. You just have to adapt and keep moving forward.
How do you handle negative feedback when you receive it?
Negative feedback can be tough, but I see it as an opportunity to improve. Early in my career, I took every criticism personally, but over time, I’ve learned that feedback—positive or negative—is valuable. When someone points out something they don’t like, it’s usually because they care about the outcome. I make sure to listen carefully and understand where they’re coming from. Most of the time, it leads to a better result in the end.
I also try to remember that design is subjective. What one person loves, another might dislike. My goal is always to create something that reflects the client’s vision, so if feedback gets me closer to that, then it’s worth paying attention to. The important thing is not to get discouraged but to use the feedback as a way to refine the design and make it stronger.
What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve overcome in your life or career, and how did you do it?
The hardest obstacle I’ve faced was when I first started Yoel’s Decor. Building a business from the ground up was challenging, especially when I didn’t have the same resources as bigger firms. There were times when I doubted if I could make it work, but I stayed committed to my vision. I knew that if I focused on delivering quality and building strong relationships with my clients, the rest would follow.
I overcame that challenge by staying patient and persistent. I took on small projects and grew through word of mouth. Each successful project built my reputation, and over time, I was able to expand and take on larger, more complex designs. It took years of hard work, but looking back, I’m proud of the obstacles I overcame to build the business I have today.
